Robert Guillaume (born November 30, 1927 in St. Louis , Missouri - † October 24, 2017 in Los Angeles , California ; real name Robert Peter Williams ) was an American actor . He became known for his role as Benson Du Bois in the television series Soap - Trautes Heim and its spin-off Benson .

Life

Prior to his acting career, Guillaume studied at Saint Louis University and Washington University . He then served in the United States Army . He made his Broadway debut in 1961 in Kwamina . This was followed by appearances in Golden Boy , Tambourines to Glory , Guys and Dolls , Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris and Purlie . He was nominated for a Tony Award for his role Guys and Dolls .

After a few guest appearances in various sitcoms such as Good Times and The Jeffersons he received in 1977 his first recurring role in the series Soap radio station ABC . He also played this role in the spin-off Benson . He won an Emmy Award for each of his appearances in the two series . Other of his series roles were Edward Sawyer in The Robert Guillaume Show (1989), Bob Ballard in Pacific Station (1991) and Isaac Jaffe in Sports Night (1998-2000). In addition to his appearances on television, he also played various roles in movies such as Meteor Man . In addition, he spoke in the English version of The Lion King and its offshoots the Mandrill Rafiki and in the English version of the game Half-Life 2 the researcher Eli Vance.

On January 14, 1999, he suffered a minor stroke from which he made full recovery.

Guillaume died on the night of October 24, 2017 of complications from prostate cancer .
