action

The writer Nicholas Gardenia is just unlucky. After serving in a Mexican prison for two years, while he is writing his new book, he is kidnapped from his forest hut and forced to rob a bank with a loaded gun. And when he is no longer needed, he is roughly thrown out of the moving car in order to then seek his luck with his ex-wife and lawyer Glenda Parks while on the run. Although she tries to help her husband Ira Parks become attorney general, she lets her heart soften and hides Nicholas in the room above her garage for the time being.

The next morning the topic of conversation changes from Ira and Glenda to Nicholas, where Ira reveals that he thinks Nicholas is a convicted felon and liar and that Glenda could not bear to even begin to think of helping him. Since Nicholas overhears the conversation, he decides against Glenda's help and tries his luck alone, after all he just has to find the two criminals and prove his innocence. So Glenda accepts Nicholas' decision and tries to go to court. But Nicholas didn't get far as he was hiding in Glenda's car. After the police noticed this, Nicholas only has the choice of hijacking the car, letting Glenda and her chauffeur Chester out and then fleeing.

Upon hearing this, Ira confronts Glenda later that evening. Since he could not believe that she was hiding a felon over the garage, he will now sleep over the garage himself until the whole situation has calmed down. But Glenda immediately tries to apologize to Ira and is horrified to discover that Nicholas has hidden in the room again. With a ruse she manages that Ira disappears and she can talk to Nicholas about how he should face the police. But he doesn't think about it and this time steals Ira's car instead of Glenda's car.

But Ira has more important problems than taking care of his stolen car, because the next day is the important dinner with the governor, who is supposed to promote him to the attorney general. Unfortunately, his housekeeper Aurora is at the doctor's, so she can't prepare the governor's favorite dish, Chicken Peperoni (Chicken à la Aurora). And as if that weren't bad enough, Nicholas sneaks into Ira's and Glenda's house again. He explains to Ira that he wants to turn himself in and takes over from Chester, who is absolutely drunk, the role of waiter and serves the governor his favorite dish. That is reason enough for Ira to ask him into the kitchen, where he beats him up behind a closed door.

A short time later, Nicholas, sued by Ira and defended by Glenda, stands before the judge and has to explain his bizarre case, which sounds more funny than bad. Before the judge can deliver any verdict, Aurora is asked into the courtroom with Glenda's six dogs. She was also recently forced to rob a bank. But with the help of the four-legged friends, she was able to arrest the two criminals who also coerced Nicholas. Ultimately, the judge has no choice but to acquit Nicholas.

Almost like the old days is one of those near misses that leave a film critic in a dilemma. It's a funny film and I had to laugh out loud a lot, but in the end the spark just didn't work. "

“Light situation comedy based on Neil Simon's tried and tested model. Pleasant entertainment thanks to the excellent presentation by Goldie Hawn. "
