reception

The television series was rated on Metacritic with a Metascore of 50/100 based on 14 reviews.

Chris Popp from booknerds.de wrote “What is noticeable in Motive during the first episode is that the focus is on the essentials, namely on the case itself. [...] That may not be revolutionary or innovative, but it is refreshing in a certain way and should especially please those crime series fans for whom the basics are more important than the trappings that tend to get out of hand in some series. ”Furthermore he thinks that “in the end […] a predominantly exciting procedural series was created, which, with the abandonment of all frills, is probably one of the most puristic of this still young decade, because here crime is again crime - even though one already knows the villain, who is often the actual victim, after just two minutes. This first season definitely makes you want another. "

Loryn Pörschke from Serienjunkies.de also has many words of praise for the series. In her review of the pilot episode, she wrote that “the first two scenes of the pilot episode of the Motive series [...] each cast a disjointed look into the lives of the murderer and his victim. With the third scene, the viewer gets to know Detective Angie Flynn ( Kristin Lehman , The Killing ). At least the third acquaintance could be the beginning of a longer friendship. Because with the series Motive , the broadcaster CTV brings a different kind of crime thriller to the start and ensnares crime fans who can make friends with well-made procedurals but want a change from the usual suspects. ”Overall, she is of the opinion that“ the dark one Storytelling with a sense of humor is sure to attract many a crime fanatic in front of the TV screen. And the concept, which already looks interesting on paper, does not disappoint in practical implementation either. "
