    The Last Tycoon is an American television series directed by Billy Ray . The plot is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished and posthumously published novel The Last Taikun ( Edmund Wilson , 1941). Up-and-coming film producer Monroe Stahr took on his business partner, the more powerful media mogul Pat Brady, in Hollywood in the 1930s. The leading roles in the Amazon production were played by Matt Bomer , Lily Collins and Kelsey Grammer .

    In 1936, the young but already experienced and successful producer Monroe Stahr worked with the moody Hollywood mogul Pat Brady in his film company. The two men's different views, ideals, and ambitions for the Hollywood company and film industry repeatedly lead to conflict. Against the background of the Depression (Great Depression) and Hitler's growing influence, they fight their competition, while at the same time an ominous triangular relationship develops between the widowed Monroe, the married Kathleen and Brady's young daughter Celia (Cecilia).

    Monroe falls in love with Kathleen, who looks very similar to his late wife Minna.     The pilot was extremely well received by viewers on Amazon Prime Video. He was able to prevail against a number of other elaborately produced series pilots and only brought about the production of the first season.

    Although the season was awarded all five stars in 52 of 58 viewer ratings and rated as excellent with an overall rating of 4.8 stars , the audience numbers were apparently not enough to approve the funding for a sequel, as the planning of a second season was discontinued in September 2017 .
