history
In 1983 Jules Shear wrote the song and recorded a demo. Shear said in an interview, “It's really great. Cyndi Lauper sang a song about me and I thought nobody was interested in my work. Then it will be a top 5 hit ”.
Lauper sings the song in A flat major . The tempo is 120 beats per minute. Lauper's singing voice spans an octave and a half over G3 and C5. The chorus was changed a bit by Lauper when she heard the high vocals in the demo and thought that it was the lead vocals.
