Life

Marie Fredriksson, 1987

After studying at the Svalöv University of Music , Fredriksson got a record deal with her band MaMas Barn (“Mommy's Children”). Since the band achieved only moderate success, they began a solo career in 1984 and gained great popularity in Sweden.

After she had previously worked as a background singer for Per Gessle's band Gyllene Tider or for himself (both in studio recordings and in live performances), she teamed up with Gessle to form the duo Roxette in 1986 . The debut album Pearls of Passion , released in the same year, was initially only successful in Sweden. The worldwide breakthrough came in 1989 with the song The Look and the album Look Sharp! . World tours with millions of viewers and record sales in the double-digit million range followed.

During Roxette's creative break, Fredriksson produced her own albums with self-written songs. For this she was awarded three times as the best singer in Sweden. Her most successful single was the ballad Tro ("Faith"). In 1992 she took part in the charity concert Artister för miljö in Stockholm with other personalities from the Swedish music industry . In 1996 she recorded the duet Alla mina bästa år ("All my best years") with Anni-Frid Lyngstad from ABBA for their album Djupa andetag . In 2000 her best-of album Äntligen (“Endlich”) was released, and in the summer of that year Fredriksson toured Sweden.

In September 2002 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. In October 2004 she released another solo album, The Change . An album followed in 2006 with interpretations of their favorite hits from the 1960s and 1970s. This time she sang in Swedish again, the title of the album is Min bäste vän . In the summer of 2006 she recorded two new songs with Per Gessle, which appeared on another of Roxette's greatest hits album in the fall .

After the group hadn't come back since Fredriksson's cancer, Roxette made a comeback at the Night of the Proms in 2009. In February 2011, after ten years, the first studio album called Charm School was released , which entered the German charts at first place. This was followed by a tour across several continents. In March 2012, another Roxette album was released with Traveling .

The tour, announced for summer 2016, was canceled due to Fredriksson's health condition. A short time later she announced her final farewell to tour life. Fredriksson was married to the musician Mikael Bolyos , with whom she has two children (* 1993 and * 1996). She died on December 9, 2019 at the age of 61 from complications from her cancer.

Fredriksson's long-time music partner Per Gessle said goodbye with personal words: “Time goes by so quickly. It wasn't long ago that we spent days and nights in my tiny apartment sharing impossible dreams. And what a dream it was that we were finally able to share! I am honored to have met your talent and your generosity. All my love goes to you and your family. Things will never be the same. "
