Charm School is Roxette's eighth studio album . It was released on EMI on February 11, 2011 and is their first studio album since Room Service in 2001.

History of origin

Roxette paused from 2002 to 2008 after singer Marie Fredriksson fell ill with a brain tumor and fought the disease for a long time. During this time, Per Gessle wrote songs for Roxette again and again, but it remained unclear whether there would ever be a reunification. In 2008, Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle finally appeared together again and after a joint tour work began on a new album.

The album was recorded in southern Sweden and Stockholm . In addition to the two band members, Clarence Öfwerman and Christoffer Lundquist were involved in the production. Christoffer Lunqvist was also active as guitarist, keyboardist and bassist, Clarence Öfwerman as keyboardist. The strings were recorded by Emil Carlsson, Johanna Skoglund, Lotta Weber Sjöholm and Tomas Ebrelius.

The cover shows several live recordings in alienated colors and was created by Pär Wickholm.

Versions

The album was released in February 2011 on both CD and LP . The deluxe edition also included twelve current live versions of older songs by the band that were recorded in St. Petersburg , Halmstad and Stavanger .

On November 28, 2011, a new edition was released under the title Charm School Revisited , which on a second CD contains remixes of the single She's Got Nothing On (But the Radio) and Speak to Me , as well as demo recordings of every single track from the actual album. Most of these demo recordings were made at Tits & Ass Studios in Gessle's hometown of Halmstad . Bassflow (Speak to Me) , Adam Rickfors and Adrian Lux are responsible for the remixes .

Music genre

Roxette continued their style on the album before the break. The music is a mixture of pop and rock music borrowed from the 1980s disco sound and classic rock . Some ballads are also included on the album.

Reviews

For a comeback album, the album was particularly favorably discussed. Artur Schulz from Laut.de summarized this as follows:

“The Swedish duo manage the feat of releasing an album that actually sounds like Roxette, without smelling old-fashioned ones. They are not committed to innovation and experimentation anyway. What for? There is no expiry date for good, classic pop rock anyway. "

- Artur Schulz : Laut.de

The US magazine Spin chose the album at number 15 of the "20 Best Pop Albums of 2011".

Chart placements

The album reached number one in the German charts, among other places. The first released single, She's Got Nothing On (But the Radio) , was also successful in many countries. In Germany, the album was awarded a platinum record for over 200,000 copies sold in Germany alone .
