Joyride is a song by the Swedish pop duo Roxette from 1991. In the US , Joyride was Roxette's fourth number one hit.

Emergence

During the 1990s studio recording in Stockholm , Per Gessle was looking for a happy and positive-sounding name for the album that was being created. In a journal he read an interview with Paul McCartney in which this the songwriting process with John Lennon as long joyride (dt .: long jaunt had described). Gessle thought that this word would be a perfect album title. The idea of writing even a song with that title came to him after his girlfriend to him on the piano the message Hello, you fool - I love you (dt .: yourself Hello, you fool, I love had left). This became the first line of the chorus . The result was a three-chord-based song that was supposed to combine Gessle's personal musical roots such as the Beatles song Magical Mystery Tour and the music of T. Rex .

The idea of incorporating the whistle into the song came to Gessle after hearing the song Always Look On the Bright Side of Life from the movie The Life of Brian , which contains a similar whistled passage. Gessle recorded the whistle himself and it took a total of twelve takes for it to meet his expectations. The spoken passage is from Dave Edwards.

publication

The song first appeared as the first track on the album of the same name . Gessle and his partner Marie Fredriksson suggested to the record company EMI that Joyride be their first single. However, EMI wanted Fading Like a Flower in Europe and Spending My Time in the USA because they valued the commercial potential of these ballads higher than that of the up-tempo piece Joyride . But Gessle and Fredriksson prevailed and the success of the single confirmed their opinion, it became the fourth number one hit in the USA and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of May 11, 1991 . The single was also successful in Europe with number 1 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden.
