history

She Bop was released in July 1984 as a single with the piece Witness as the B-side . The song became a commercial success, peaking at number 3 in the US on September 8, 1984, and spending a total of 25 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 . On April 17, 1989, She Bop was awarded gold in the United States . In 1984, Cyndi Lauper and She Bop became the first woman to land four top ten hits in a row in the USA. The song is included on all of Cyndi Lauper's best-of albums, but mostly in the album version, which differs significantly from the remix released as a single. The single version can only be found on the 1994 compilation Twelve Deadly Cyns .

For her album The Body Acoustic , released in 2005 , Lauper recorded She Bop again as a ballad . The piece was published in a total of at least 32 versions.

Controversy

The song was considered controversial as the text deals with the subject of female masturbation with reference to the homosexual adult magazine Blueboy . Because of the sexual content, She Bop was added to the Filthy Fifteen list (Dirty 15 list) of the Parents Music Resource Center . A sticker on the record jacket indicated that the song was only suitable for adults.

Cover versions

The song has been covered several times, including by James Last (1984), Eläkeläiset (1998), One Fine Day (2006) and GWAR .
