The Big Picture is an American comedy film from Christopher Guest from the year 1989 .
action
Nick Chapman is a student graduating from a film school. He wins a prestigious award for his short film; At the beginning of the film, the competition entries - including those by Lydia Johnson and Chapman - will be shown.
The studio manager Allen Habel offers Chapman the realization of a project that Chapman has been thinking about for a long time. Chapman wants to film a love triangle in which two men and a woman change in the course of the plot. Habel suggests that two women play in it. The action is later moved from winter to summer. Chapman's original concept is changed several times until a completely different film is planned than initially thought.
The actress Gretchen wants to get a role in the planned film. She tries to seduce Chapman. Chapman argues with his girlfriend Susan Rawlings and moves out of their apartment. There are also differences between Chapman and his old friend Emmet Sumner.
After a change in studio management, the Chapmans project is put on hold. Chapman tries in vain to warm up the new studio boss for his film - he suggests more far-reaching concept changes than Habel once asked. Chapman learns that Gretchen has a boyfriend she wants to be with. He lives off odd jobs.
Chapman meets Lydia Johnson, who also lives from a temporary job. They are shooting a music video together in which Chapman uses parts of his successful competition entry. The film industry becomes aware of the video, and Chapman receives numerous offers. He reconciles with Sumner and Rawlings.
Chapman wants to make a film based on his original concept, although his agent Neil Sussman thinks it is a big mistake . In the last scene you can see the shooting; two men and a woman are playing in front of a house that is being covered with artificial snow. The Chapmans team includes Sumner and Johnson.
