action

The Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan was part of the President's personal protection in the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. He feels that he could not save Kennedy's life as a personal failure. After several years in the service of the Ministry of Finance, he reports back to work in the security department. It turns out that this activity, especially walking next to the presidential limo, is physically overwhelming. He is ridiculed; His colleague Lilly Raines is one of the scoffers at the beginning. However, Frank and Lilly get closer in the course of the film.

Soon an anonymous caller calls himself Booth and announces that he wants to assassinate the president. He asks if Frank would be willing to sacrifice his life to protect the president's. After it turns out that the caller is the former CIA agent Mitch Leary, Learys almost manages to catch him after another call. When Frank, who has started the chase, threatens to fall from the roof of a house to his death, Leary offers him his hand. After some hesitation, Frank takes it, but then points his gun with the other hand at Leary, who tries to provoke Frank to pull the trigger and finally lets him fall onto the nearest landing on the fire escape below him. When Frank's colleague Al D'Andrea, who was watching from the rooftop opposite, pointed his gun at Leary and believed he had the situation under control, Leary shot him. Shortly beforehand, the young family man wanted to quit his job, but ultimately let Frank change his mind.

In the finale, Leary comes to a VIP event disguised as a campaign donor and shoots the President with a plastic pistol. Frank catches the bullet and is injured. Leary kidnaps Frank and holed up with him in a glass elevator. During their last dialogue, Frank succeeds in informing his colleagues from the Secret Service over the radio about the position of the two people in the elevator. Led by Lilly, the snipers shoot Leary, but only hit the elevator's glass. Frank manages to overpower Leary with the broken glass. In the course of the duel, Leary falls out of the now open elevator and at the last moment is able to hold on to the baseboard. This time, Frank offers Leary his hand so that he can pull himself up. Leary decides against it and falls to his death.

“The assassin is played by a terrific John Malkovich (and he is) an equal partner for Clint Eastwood. Brilliant dialogues - also in the German dubbed version - and effective music combine with a good dose of humor under Petersen's solid direction to create a captivating psychodrama. One of the best films of the year. "

“After Wolfgang Petersen (' Das Boot ') made a rather weak Hollywood debut with ' Tod im Spiegel ', the call from Clint Eastwood's agent, who had chosen him as his dream director, was the rescue and his 'second chance'. Petersen was able to fully rehabilitate himself with this fast-paced high-tension thriller and also proved a sure hand for blockbusters with his [...] film ' Outbreak '. "

“The tension in the film results more from the characters and their anchoring in the psychology of the American nation than from superficial action. Good presentation and a concentrated direction that is also sure-fire at highlights give the clichés of the genre an ambiguous meaning. "

Awards

The film received three Oscar nominations, including for John Malkovich (best supporting role) and Jeff Maguire (best screenplay). The composer Ennio Morricone won the Film Award ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards .

Background and production notes

  • Because Clint Eastwood knew Das Boot and valued it as a “wonderful film”, had also seen Death in the Mirror and did not want to direct it again immediately after Merciless , he asked Wolfgang Petersen whether he wanted to direct the film . For Petersen this meant the final breakthrough in Hollywood.
  • The Secret Service served as an advisor on this film. This is the first time that the Secret Service has offered its full cooperation in the creation of a feature film.
  • The role of Frank Horrigan (played by Clint Eastwood) was inspired by real Secret Service agent Clint Hill , the bodyguard of President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy . On November 22, 1963, he was in Dallas, unable to prevent the attempt on the president. Hill climbed - after the third shot at Kennedy (the head shot) - on the trunk of the presidential limousine and then leaned protectively over the hit president and first lady. In 1975, journalist Mike Wallace interviewed Clint Hill for his TV magazine 60 Minutes . Hill felt responsible for the president's death and stated that he would have been willing to give his life for the president.
  • For the first time, digital effects were used in a Hollywood film, not to make the film look lavish, but to save money, e.g. B. for extras. The photo-realistic effects made film history, but because of their perfection they went unnoticed by most viewers and filmmakers alike. The film wasn't even nominated for an Oscar in the visual effects category. After seeing the footage of Air Force One flying, another producer called producer Jeff Apple, where the plane could be rented. However, it was purely computer animation.
  • There was official permission through private connections to the American Secret Service to record the actual election campaign events of George Bush Sr. and to make Bill Clinton . The film president, Eastwood and other actors were digitally copied into these recordings. This enabled the production costs to be reduced considerably.
  • To copy Eastwood into the recordings with Kennedy, clips from Dirty Harry films were used. Films from the 1960s with Eastwood were mostly westerns and therefore completely unsuitable because of the clothing. Because of the typical 1970s hairstyle, Clint Eastwood's sideburns were digitally retouched.
  • Fred Dalton Thompson , who plays the disagreeable White House chief of staff, was also a real life politician and ran unsuccessfully to succeed President Bush in 2008 .
