The Swiss School of Milan ( Italian : Scuola svizzera di Milano , French : École suisse de Milan , Rhaeto-Romanic Scola Svizra Milaun , SSM) is a German-speaking private school and Swiss school abroad in Milan , Italy .

history

The International School of Protestant Families was founded in 1861 with the aim of offering German-speaking educational opportunities in Milan, as well as a non-denominational alternative to the then predominantly Catholic education system for non-Catholic students , which the new Italian nation-state had inherited from Austria . Until the outbreak of the First World War, the school, which was attended primarily by Swiss and Imperial German students, was not supported by any foreign state.

It was not until 1919, after most German citizens had to leave Italy for war reasons, that the international school, which had run into difficulties, was sponsored by the Swiss Confederation as a school abroad and renamed the Swiss School in Milan.

German remained as the teaching and working language, but the proportion of German-speaking students decreased dramatically. This is due on the one hand to the adoption of the Italian language by the new generations of Swiss families in Milan, and on the other hand to the acceptance of an increasing number of non-Swiss - mostly Italian - students. Nowadays the majority of the students at the Swiss School in Milan are Italian-speaking, but the lessons are usually given by German-speaking teachers and in German.

Today the school offers a full range of education from kindergarten to high school graduation .
