Place of investigation ( Hamburg )

Paul Trimmel is the title character in a series of crime novels by Friedhelm Werremeier and at the same time the main character of the first Tatort episodes broadcast in 1970 and ten more episodes. In addition, Trimmel supports the customs investigator Kressin  - portrayed by Sieghardt Rupp  - in the third crime scene episode Kressin and the dead man in the fleet in his investigations in Hamburg.

The film adaptations of the novels were shown with Walter Richter in the leading role in the 1970s and early 1980s on ARD television . The Trimmel crime thriller Exklusiv, which was broadcast in 1969 ! was broadcast again in 1971 as the second Trimmel episode in the Tatort series. The episodes with Commissioner Trimmel had to be discontinued for reasons of age of Walter Richter, who died in 1985. Not all novels were made into films. Therefore the books contain further private and professional details about the Hamburg investigator. In 1971, Der Richter in Weiß Rolf Bossi appeared in a supporting role as a defense attorney. In 1982, a scene in the last Trimmel crime scene, Trimmel and Isolde (episode 141), in which Christiane Krüger was seen unclothed from behind , caused a surprise .

After Richter's death, the NDR, together with Werremeier, decided to film further episodes of Trimmel outside of the crime scene series. As the main actor in the ARD series Paul Trimmel - Chief Inspector , Gerd Kunath played the role of Trimmel. Of the three planned 60-minute episodes, only two episodes were realized because the television audience's expectations could not be met with the production of the series episodes, which obviously associated the role of Paul Trimmel with the person of Walter Richter.

The figure Paul Trimmel

Trimmel was introduced to the series as the Hamburg commissioner and was seen as the chief commissioner from the fourth episode. The characteristics of the figure Trimmel are presented as dominant, challenging, growling, choleric, but caring. In addition, he repeatedly violates service regulations. His wife died during World War II. He lives in the Hamburg-Hamm district . Through one of his cases he got to know the witness Gaby Montag better, who later moved in with him. In the course of his investigations, Trimmel always likes to draw on the psychological expertise of his friend and doctorate, Dr. Lorff back. In his spare time he frequented the first episodes in a local pub called the Old Farmsen Inn in Hamburg-Farmsen-Berne , and later in a pub in the city center.
