action

The Austrian Walter Lanninger moved to Lübeck with his fiancée Else Huber and works there as a ski expert in a sports shop. He only wants to do this temporarily and after two years build up a business with his fiancée in his home country. However, Lanninger cannot handle money and gets into debt, so that his salary is attached. Lanninger also cheats on Else with the divorced Sonja Steinitz. His boss admonishes Lanninger to manage his money better in the future, and he refuses a raise. Because of the garnishment of his salary, Lanninger even has to borrow money from Else. When Lanninger goes to the bank, he happens to observe old Mrs. Wex withdrawing 8,000 DM from her savings account. Due to his lack of money, he spontaneously decides to pursue Mrs. Wex and steals her money in the cover of darkness. In the pursuit of Lanninger by the victim, a neighbor of the old lady who stands in Lanninnger's way is seriously injured. Chief Detective Beck is entrusted with the case. At the hospital, he learns that the uninvolved victim is unlikely to survive. A journalist interviews Ms. Wex and wants to tell her that the perpetrator hit the other man, but Ms. Wex protests.

Beck goes to Lanninger because, according to the bank's documents, he was the first customer after Mrs. Wex at the counter. He claims that he can remember the older woman, but he did not see that she withdrew 8,000 DM. He has no alibi to show for the time of the crime. He claims to have repaired his car by himself at the time of the crime. Beck learns of the garnishment from Lanninger's boss. Beck looks for Lanninger again, this time in the tennis club where he also works. He asks him to come to the hospital the next morning for a confrontation that Mr. Malmann, who came to help Ms. Wex during the attack, had woken up from the coma after all. Beck notices Lanninger's close relationship with his tennis student Sonja Steinitz and correctly concludes that he has a relationship with her and lives beyond his means. Meanwhile, Sonja offers her boyfriend financial support in order to defend himself. At home, Lanninger von Else had to listen to accusations and suspicions due to a visit from Beck, he dismissed this as nonsense. But Else notices that her fiancé is really involved in the robbery of the old lady. Lanninger then makes a confession in front of Else, he asserts that he got involved in the act and did not want the man's injuries. Else puts pressure on Lanninger to return the money.

In the hospital, the doctor treating Beck forbids the confrontation, Mr Malmann shows hardly any reactions and is dying, Beck then asks the doctor to help him with a bluff. When Lanninger arrives, Beck also asks him about his relationship with Sonja Steinitz, who reacts indignantly and denies a relationship with Sonja. Lanninger seems nervous about the upcoming confrontation. Beck informs Lanninger shortly afterwards that this cannot take place after all, because Malmann is dying. In the meantime, the newspaper that Ms. Wex interviewed after the crime replaced him with the stolen DM 8,000. Malmann has since died. Beck asks Else to come to the presidium and asks her about Lanninger. He reveals to her that Malmann is dead and that it is now about manslaughter, possibly murder. Else then suddenly gives her fiancé an alibi that she forgot this during the stressful initial interview. In response to Else's previous statement, this provides a flimsy explanation that Beck can no longer elicit from her. At home Else packs her things, leaves Lanninger and returns to Austria . Immediately after Else said goodbye, Lanninger meets with Sonja, for whom he is now free, and lets her introduce him to higher circles.

When he wants to go on a sailing trip with his new acquaintances, he has to avoid a little girl who suddenly runs out onto the street in front of him and injures herself in the resulting accident. Beck visits Lanninger in the hospital, Lanninger reacts irritably to his visit. Beck finds out that Lanninger is now engaged to Sonja Steinitz. In the workshop, the employees can now find the money that Lanninger had stolen and hidden in the car. The workshop owner calls the police, so Beck Lanninger and Steinitz are already waiting for them when they want to pick up the car from the workshop. Beck arrests Lanninger.
