Jörg Maria Berg
Jörg Maria Berg (born September 24, 1930 in Schönbühel / Donau ; real name Adolf Maria Strassmayr ) is an Austrian pop singer and actor.
Life
After general school education and an apprenticeship as an export and import merchant, Strassmayr started studying music in the subjects of trombone and percussion in Krems an der Donau, Austria . During his studies he became a member of a combo in which he appeared as an instrumentalist. When he continued his studies at the State Academy for Music in Vienna, he was initially accepted as a trombonist by a twelve-man orchestra, but later took on the singing part. The composer Sepp Fellner made Gerhard Mendelson , producer at Polydor , the largest record company in German-speaking countries, aware of the young singer. Mendelson was convinced of Strassmayr's talent, gave him a record deal with Polydor and gave him the stage name Jörg Maria Berg.
He already appeared under this name at a New Year's Eve event in 1954. At the beginning of 1955 Jörg Maria Berg recorded his first record with the title A summer night in Santa Margaritha / I drive you up into the land of love . With Two White Seagulls , he entered the German charts for the first time in September 1955 with ninth place. Recordings with duets and vocal groups shaped Berg's career in the following years and brought him the greatest successes. He was most successful together with Peter Kraus under the pseudonym James Brothers ( Wenn , 1958, rank 5), with whom he also appeared in the 1959 film Melody and Rhythm . He also recorded several records with Erni Bieler ( Seven Mountains, Seven Valleys ; 1957, 9th). Berg was also a member of the singing groups Die Blauen Jungs , Montecarlos , Optimisten and Western Trio (together with Lolita). Berg's most successful solo title was the German vocal version of the Pérez Prado instrumental piece Patricia , with which he reached 3rd place in the German charts at the end of 1958. Altogether, Berg was able to place himself in the German best lists four times with his solo titles, in which he did not appear after Patricia . In March 1962, Polydor published the last solo record with Jörg Maria Berg. She remained unsuccessful with the titles Sweetheart Guitar and Don't Forget the Tango like the records of the last few years.
After his record contract with Polydor had expired, Berg took on a few neglected records with Electrola and Acordia. Eventually he took on his real name Strassmayr again and became a presenter on Austrian radio. He took up singing again in the mid-1960s and got engagements as an opera singer. In addition, he appeared as an actor in the Theater an der Wien , and finally he was director of the Lower Austrian school theater for several years.
On January 13, 2012, he and his wife received the "City Star 2011" award in category 1 (award for life's work) from the Wieselburg municipality.
His daughter Elisabeth "Sissi" Berg voc performs regularly in Vienna's Jazzland together with Horst Michael Schaffer tp, Robert Schönherr p, Joschi Schneeberger b, Andi Weiss dm under the name "Chet's Romance" with a program in memory of Chet Baker .
