Ennstal Classic
The Ennstal Classic is one of the most famous classic cars - rallies in Austria and Europe for historic cars built before 1972. The existing 1993 event centered in Gröbming in Styria .
history
The Ennstal-Classic was founded in 1993 by the internationally known Austrian motorsport journalists Helmut Zwickl and Michael Glöckner under the motto "Motorsport we used to be, motorsport you can touch". At the start of the first Ennstal Classic there were 35 vintage cars, driven by Karl Wendlinger , Dieter Quester , Red Bull Boss Dietrich Mateschitz and Austria's most successful rally driver Franz Wittmann , among others . The first winner was two-time rally world champion Walter Röhrl in his private Austin Healey .
In 1994, in the second year of the Ennstal Classic, Stirling Moss started for the first time with his wife Susie in Gröbming.
In 1996, the “Alfred Neubauer Trophy” was awarded to the overall winner for the first time, an award that the famous Mercedes-Benz racing director personally bestowed on racing drivers John Surtees , Jim Clark , Jackie Stewart , Jochen Rindt and Niki Lauda while he was still alive .

During the 3-day event, the oldtimers cover approx. 900 kilometers through Styria, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Carinthia. The route of the prologue (Thursday) and marathon (Friday) changes annually. Fixed points are the spiral staircase-like panorama road Stoderzinken , along the high plateau of the Postalm and the high alpine area of the Dachstein and the Tauern ( Sölkpass ). The Nockalmstraße and the road below the rock barrier of the Gesaeuse are other elements of the route that is running on the private grid.
The highlight is the annual Grand Prix on Saturday in Gröbming with over 20,000 spectators, during which racing legends with historic racing cars contest a demonstration.
Every year, racing legends and personalities from sports and TV such as Sebastian Vettel , Nigel Mansell , Stirling Moss , Walter Röhrl , Gerhard Berger , Niki Lauda , Hans Hermann , Emerson Fittipaldi , Jochen Mass , Mark Webber , Rowan Atkinson , Franz Klammer , Christian Clerici , Peter Kraus , Roland Düringer , Rudolf Roubinek , Robert Palfrader , Klaus Wildbolz , Tom Wlaschiha etc. to Gröbming.

With over 100,000 spectators (information provided by the organizers), the Ennstal Classic is one of the largest motorsport events in Austria, which is why the event is also an important economic factor for the region. With over 20,000 overnight stays, the event generates indirect profitability of over 10 million euros. The field of participants is limited to 230 classic cars and will be selected from over 350 registrations. 49 different car brands and participants from 18 nations started the 2019 Ennstal Classic.
Rating
The participants must achieve an average speed of exactly 40 km / h or 50 km / h during the special stages. It is stopped to a hundredth of a second, deviations are assessed with penalty points. 1 second of deviation is therefore 100 penalty points. The team with the fewest penalty points at the end of the rally won.

Planai Classic
At the same time, the sister event Planai Classic takes place every year at the beginning of January. This is a classic car rally in snow and ice. The participants drive a prologue through the Schladming-Dachstein region from Gröbming via Schladming and back, as well as a mountain test (consists of two passes) on the Planai . In April, the Südsteiermark-Classic will also take place in southern Styria.
