Shoshone is the largest city ( city ) and the county seat of Lincoln County in the US state of Idaho . The place is named after the Shoshone , but is pronounced “Show-shown” (with a silent “e”).

Shoshone is located on the Little Wood River about 20 kilometers east of Gooding at an altitude of 1208 meters. The southern arm of the Black Butte Crater Lava Field runs north of the city . About 25 kilometers north of Shoshone are the Shoshone Ice Caves , hollow underground lava tubes that are cold enough even during the summer that the ice remains frozen in them.
In the city, the US Highways 26 and 93 share the same route from the Craters of the Moon National Monument . The US Highway 26 runs further west towards Gooding, the US Highway 93 turn south toward Twin Falls .
Shoshone has an area of 3.10 km², of which 3.04 km² is land and 0.06 km² is water.
history
Shoshone was founded in 1882 during the construction of the railroad . His station developed into the most important station in the region and was for a long time the only Amtrak station in central southern Idaho.
Demographics
According to the United States Census 2010 , Shoshone had 1,461 inhabitants, of which 708 were men and 753 were women. 465 residents were under 20 years old, 229 were 65 or older.
