Hurtin 'Me ( dt. "(It) hurt me") is a song by British singer and rapper Stefflon Don in collaboration with the American rapper French Montana . It was released on June 16, 2017 and reached the top 10 of the UK singles chart . For over 600,000 units sold, the song was awarded a platinum record by the British Phonographic Industry and counts as the rapper's commercial breakthrough.

After the feature Stefflon Dons on Jeremih's single London and after several of her videos were viewed over a million times on YouTube , the record company Universal Music noticed the rapper and signed her. With the label 54 London , Universal created an extra sub-label for them.

Hurtin 'Me is the first single after the EP Real Ting to be released by Stefflon Don. The song was written and composed by Stefflon Don, French Montana and Rodney Hwingwiri and produced by the latter together with Rymez. The mastering was done by Stuart Hawkes, the mixing was done by Phil Tan. According to his own statement, Stefflon Don knew that she needed to work with another artist for this song and French Montana was the first thing that came to her mind.

Musical

Hurtin 'Me is classified into the genres R&B and dancehall from different angles . The song is structured in verse - chorus form, it is encased by an intro and an outro . Stefflon Don sings the first two verses, the rap from French Montana follows in the third verse. The refrain is performed by both of them. In terms of content, Hurtin 'Me is about being abandoned. The singer announced via Twitter that the song was not about her, but that she was the new friend that the song contained.

Reviews

Hurtin 'Me received mostly positive reviews. For James Hall of The Daily Telegraph, "the song highlights Stefflon Don's more vulnerable side." Kate Hutchinson of The Guardian know Hurtin' Me similarities to songs by Rihanna on. Alex Norris wrote that Stefflon Don is "undoubtedly taking a step towards the mainstream" with this song. " Hurtin 'Me may lack the ferocity of Stefflon Don's earlier songs, but its softer side is equally enticing," the reviewer continued. BigFM described the song as “the finest club sound with casual feel-good vibes” and added: “In contrast to their debut Real Ting , this time you hear more than just uncompromising rap. The 25-year-old shows all her singing talent and complements the relaxed R'n'B sound with a nice rap part from French Montana. The track is not only perfect for dancing, but is also ideal for a relaxed nodding atmosphere in the car ”.

Commercial win

Hurtin 'Me entered the UK singles chart at number 47 on August 24, 2017 . After the song had spent five weeks in midfield, the top 20 was reached for the first time on September 28, 2017. In the ninth week of the chart, Hurtin 'Me entered the top 10 (9th place), a week later the best position was achieved with 7th place. After that, the song got out of the top 10 again, but stayed in the charts until February 22, 2018. In total, Hurtin 'Me spent two weeks in the top 10, seven weeks in the top 20 and 27 weeks in the entire UK singles charts. For Stefflon Don this was the first chart success as a solo artist. The song sold in the UK over 600,000 copies and was therefore from the April 13, 2018 British Phonographic Industry with a platinum record awarded

In German-speaking countries, Hurtin 'Me did not get any placements in the single charts. The song also missed a placement on the Billboard Hot 100 , but achieved placements in the subcharts R & B / Hip-Hop Rhytmic (12th place) and R & B / Hip-Hop Airplay (32nd place). Another chart placement succeeded Hurtin 'Me in the French single charts (place 70).

Music video

The official music video for Hurtin 'Me was filmed by Luke Biggins and Stefflon Don in Bevery Hills and Los Angeles . In the beginning, Stefflon Don walks through her Beverly Hills mansion, looking at old photos of her ex-boyfriend and thinking about him. This is followed by a choreography with several dancers on the roof of the villa. French Montana, who plays Stefflon Don's new boyfriend in the video, raps his verse on the roof of a high-rise in Los Angeles. The video was viewed over 66 million times on YouTube (as of May 2018).
