The model of the intro is the prelude in classical music . It is a two-, four- or eight-bar introduction or the opening stanza in jazz , pop music and rock music . In electronic dance music , an intro is usually found in the original mix. The intro is the first part of the basic structure of a pop song, which usually consists of intro- verse - refrain - verse - refrain - coda - ( fade-out ). Its function is to prepare the piece of music and to build tension in the listener, to arouse interest and to contribute to the recognition value.

Various musical options are available for this. Thematic passages of the musical work are either presented in abbreviated form or motifs that do not belong to the theme are chosen. The intro often reveals something typical about the song. It is mostly instrumental, but there are also vocal variants. Concise riffs on guitars (for example in the song Somethin 'Stupid ) or keyboards are very often used ( Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin , May 1969; Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple , December 1971). A violin intro is presented by Roll Over Beethoven from the Electric Light Orchestra (September 1972); a long piano intro in Fats Domino's The Fat Man reveals clear boogie-woogie rhythms (December 1949), while Queen's drums introduce the popular We Will Rock You (September 1977). A spoken intro can be heard in Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop) by Scatman John (January 1995), a 48-second long a-cappella intro precedes the Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody (August 1975) .
Intros contain shortened chord progressions or rhythms that also occur in the piece of music itself. In addition, motifs can also be selected as the intro that can no longer be heard in the actual music theme (such as the French national anthem in All You Need Is Love by the Beatles ; May 1967). In numerous pieces, the tension-building intro, which gets louder, also becomes faster ( accelerando ) as in Wanda Jackson's Santo Domingo (recorded on March 9, 1965 in Cologne) or Poupée de cire, poupée de son by France Gall (March 1965).
Others
In the case of music albums on LPs or CD (especially hip-hop and R&B ), the intro also refers to the first piece of music if it is not a song of its own , but a musical introduction. A musical transition between two tracks is often referred to as an interlude .
Texts
With text works, the text of an article is divided into two parts (introtext and main text). The introtext then appears as a raised part at the beginning of the article so that the reader can get an idea of the content. In digital newspapers or on the web , text intros are often included in listings that only contain introtexts ( content blog ) in order to draw the reader's attention to a larger number of articles.
Gatherings
Introductory speeches are available at various types of meetings, such as general meetings , meetings or conversations . They serve to prepare the listener for the intended main topic.
Internet sites
On the web, a page is referred to as an intro , which is placed before a website is accessed. Often an animation in Adobe Flash or a special graphic presentation, for example a logo.

In the field of digital art ( demo scene ), intros are small computer programs, usually a maximum of 64 KB in size, which generate graphic effects / animations in real time and play background music to match. These intros have been established since the time of the VC20 , where they were used as opening credits for the distribution of programs and as a marker or membership of a demo / cracker group.
watch TV
TV series often have recurring introductory sequences, which are also referred to as intro or opening credits . A moderation should also prepare for the next article in a magazine program or lead to the next topic.
Computer games
At the beginning of a computer or video game , a short film (in game graphics or rendered ) is often shown, which serves as a preparation for the story that is about to take place. This film is called the intro .
Outro
Analogous to the term intro , the term outtro or outro has also developed. It denotes the opposite of the intro , i.e. the last part of a work. In musical works, this is called a coda .
