Andrae Hugh Sutherland (born July 19, 1988 in Saint Thomas, Jamaica ), known by his stage name Popcaan , is a Jamaican dancehall artist. He is under contract with Mixpak Records .

Life

Sutherland grew up in Portmore , Jamaica . When he was seven years old, Sutherland trained as a singer and performer.

In 2007 Popcaan met the dancehall artist Vybz Kartel at a local event "My Scheme" , who accepted the young DJ into his group "Portmore Empire". So he became Popcaan's producer and mentor at the same time. Vybz Kartel not only showed him the rules of the music business, but also took him to shows like "Sting" and "Reggae Sumfest". Popcaan began to make music for the Adidjahiem Productions label with its producer NotNice . NotNice was the first producer Popcaan made music with professionally. He got off to a good start with "Gal Wine", followed by hits like "It Nuh Work So", "Jah Jah Protect Me", "Gangsta City" and "Dream"

Popcaan's breakthrough came in 2010 with “Clarks”, a collaboration with Vybz Kartel . The song had international success and caused a worldwide increase in sales of the British shoe brand. In 2011 Popcaan received the “EME (Excellence in Music and Entertainment) Award in the“ Best New Artist ”category. The song “Clarks” also won in the categories “Collaboration of the Year and Song of the Year - Dancehall”. At the end of January 2012 Popcaan released a new mixtape, "Chromatic presents Yiy Change", a continuation of his mixtape "Hot Skull, Fry Yiy, Boil Branz" from 2010. In March Popcaan got his first single "Only Man She Want" Billboard entry at number 89 on the Billboard R&B / Hip-Hop chart. Later the rapper Busta Rhymes released a remix of the song.

In an issue of the New York Times , Popcaan was interviewed about the song's success. He won in the three categories "Favorite Summer Song", "Local Chart topping song of the year" and "Young, Hot and Hype Male" of the Youth View Awards. Since then, Popcaan has been touring Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and South America. During his stay in Canada, he made contact with the Canadian rapper Drake , who had already publicly expressed his admiration for Popcaan. In 2013, Popcaan released the video for "Unruly Rave," which was filmed in Toronto and directed by October's Very Own label head Niko. In 2012 Popcaan could be heard on Pusha T's song "Blocka". His vocals were then sampled in 2013 by Kanye West on the album "Yeezus".

In 2014 Popcaan signed a contract for several albums with Mixpak Records. His debut album, "Where We Come From", was released on June 10, 2014 via Mixpak Records. The project was produced by Dre Skull . The first single, "Everything Nice", was produced by Dubbel Dutch and released on October 1, 2013. It entered the Billboard Reggae Chart at number 2 and has more than 5 million views on YouTube.

In June 2014 Popcaan was featured on the cover of the 92nd edition of "The Fader". He was also featured on Melissa Steel's single "Kisses For Breakfast," which was a top ten hit in the UK in August 2014. In September 2014 he was nominated for the MOBO Awards in the “Best Reggae Act” category. In 2015 he won the MOBO Award. In March 2017 the British music group Gorillaz released the song "Saturnz Barz" in collaboration with Sutherland.
