Blackfoot is a city and the county seat of Bingham County in the US state of Idaho .
location
Blackfoot is located on the Snake River about 40 kilometers southwest of the state capital Idaho Falls . Interstate 84 runs west of the city through US Highway 91 . At Blackfoot, US Highway 26 leaves I-84, with which it ran from Idaho Falls, and follows the Goodale cutoff of the historic Oregon Trail to the Craters of the Moon National Monument .
The city has an area of 16.08 km², of which 15.33 km² is land and 0.75 km² is water.
history
First settlers settled in the Blackfoot area in the 1860s. In the 1870s, the city arose around a train station about 1 km from the river, which was built on a railway line laid by the Utah Northern Railroad. When Bingham County was newly formed in 1885 , Blackfoot became its county seat .
Demographics
According to the United States Census 2010 , Blackfoot had 11,899 inhabitants, of which 5,907 men and 5,992 women. 4045 inhabitants were under 20 years old, 1529 were 65 or older.
