Orofino is a city in Clearwater County , Idaho and is located on Orofino Creek and the north bank of the Clearwater River . In 2000, Clearwater County's county seat had 3,247 residents. The historic Canoe Camp where the Lewis and Clark Expedition built five new canoes and launched them on October 7, 1805 to sail down the river to the Pacific Ocean .

About six kilometers north of the city is the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery and the Dworshak Dam , the third tallest dam in the United States. It was completed in the early 1970s.

In Orofino there is now a prison as well as the Idaho State Hospital North. Both institutions are in the vicinity of Orofino High School. Annually on Independence Day on July 4, a celebration will be held in Orofino; The town also hosts the Clearwater County Fair and Lumberjack Days towards the end of summer.

history

The name originally consisted of two words, Oro Fino, and referred to a gold rush camp that existed about three kilometers south of Pierce in 1861 and is now a ghost town . When the Indian reservation of the Nez Perce in 1895 opened for settlement, built Clifford Fuller a trading post on his new homeland and the city Orofino-on-the-Clearwater was established the following year. The railroad, which later became part of the Camas Prairie Railroad , reached Orofino from Lewiston in 1899.

The road is connected by a bridge to US Highway 12 on the south bank of the Clearwater River . This highway heads west to Lewiston , Idaho and east over Lolo Pass to Missoula , Montana .
