Idaho City is a place and county seat of Boise County in the US state of Idaho . During the gold rush in the 1860s, it was the largest city in the northwestern United States.
geography
It is located approximately 58 km (36 mi) northeast of the capital Boise on State Route 21, on the Ponderosa Scenic Byway. The site covers an area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²).
history
At the height of the gold rush in the 1860s, up to 20,000 people lived here, making Idaho City the largest city in the entire northwestern United States at the time. Among other things, Idaho's first Catholic parish was founded here in 1863 with the construction of St. Joseph's Church.
Likewise, Idaho City holds an important position in Masonic history. It was here that Idaho's first Masonic Lodge was established in 1867. The lodge has now moved to Boise .
