Karl Eugen Guthe
Karl Adolf Eugen Guthe (born March 5, 1866 in Hanover , † September 11, 1915 in Ashland ) was an American physicist.
Hermann Guthe's nephew and second son of the wine merchant Otto Guthe (1833–1880) and Anna Hanstein graduated from high school in Hanover in 1884 and attended the technical college from 1885–1887. He then studied physics in Marburg, where he passed the senior teacher state examination in 1889 with a thesis on seismology. He taught at the University of Strasbourg and continued his studies. In Marburg he was awarded a doctorate in 1892 with his work “About the mechanical telephone”. phil. PhD. Meanwhile, on February 28, 1872, his father had sold the Hansteinsche Haus (Burgstrasse 30, later Rusthaus ) to the workers' association founded in 1855 .
Around 1891 he had met Clara Belle Ware (1867-1947), the daughter of Emmore Ware from Ohio. In 1892 Guthe emigrated to the United States to marry her. The couple had three children: Carl Eugene Guthe (1893–1974; anthropologist and archaeologist), Ida Belle (1896–1983; teacher; ∞ Werner Hegemann ) and Otto Emmor (1904–1984; Assistant Director at the CIA).
He became a lecturer in 1893, assistant professor in 1900, professor of physics in 1909, dean of the Graduate Department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1912 and the State University of Iowa from 1905 to 1906 .
He was a member of the German Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He mainly published on electricity. Karl Guthe Jansky's father named his offspring after his mentor Guthe. After Guthe suffered an intestinal disorder while visiting his brother-in-law in Ashland and died after two operations, he was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond .
