Marvin Gaye Williams, Jr. (born June 19, 1986 in Bremerton , Washington ) is an American basketball player . He has been in the North American professional league NBA since the 2005/06 season and for the Milwaukee Bucks since 2020 . He previously played at the University of North Carolina , where Michael Jordan also played, under one of North America's top college coaches, Roy Williams .

High school and college careers

Williams played in his hometown at Bremerton High School in Washington state when he was young. There he was the star of his team with just under 29 points per game and 15 rebounds on average. By the time he left high school he was known as one of the best players of his class and received a slew of awards and prizes. Among other things, he was elected to the McDonald's All-American Team , which is composed of the best high school players from all over the United States.

Williams then received a scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , one of the best and most famous basketball universities in North America. In his freshman year (first season) at college, he was mainly used as the 6th man on the highly successful team. He averaged just under 12 points in 22 minutes per game. His team, the UNC Tar Heels , made it to the finals of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship of the best college teams in the USA, which they won with an important basket from Williams shortly before the end of the game with 5 points against the Fighting Illini of Illinois won 75:70. After that huge win, Williams quit college and enrolled in the NBA draft .

NBA career

Williams in March 2012

The Atlanta Hawks selected Williams in the 2005 NBA draft as the 2nd pick after the Australian Andrew Bogut . The builder players Chris Paul and Deron Williams , who were previously picked as the first pick and played against Williams in the NCAA finals, were only chosen after him.

In his first season, Williams largely disappointed and criticism of the Hawks for choosing him over the better-playing Paul and Williams became louder. Still, Williams was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team . In his second season he improved and promptly played in the top five of the Hawks. He increased his point average from 8.5 to 13.1. In his third year as a professional he finally proved his potential by helping as one of the leading players to lead the Hawks back into the postseason after more than ten years of playoff abstinence . He formed together with Josh Smith and Al Horford one of the youngest front courts in the NBA. In the playoffs, the Hawks failed after three surprising home wins against eventual champions Boston Celtics in the 7th game in the best-of-seven series 3: 4.

In the years that followed, however, Williams was never quite able to justify his high expectations. His stats leveled off at around 10 points and 5 rebounds per game. Stamped an eternal talent by fans, Williams was transferred to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Devin Harris in the summer of 2012 . In his first year, Williams failed to convince and his stats dropped to a career low of 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. The second year went better and Williams finished the year with 9.1 points and 5.1 rebounds.

He left Jazz in the summer of 2014 and signed a two-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets . In July 2016, he extended his contract for another four years.

Others

Williams middle name "Gaye" comes from his father, who was named after the American singer Marvin Gaye . Marvin has two younger brothers, Demetrius and J'Tonn.

Williams was a childhood fan of the Seattle SuperSonics , so he was less than pleased with their 2008 move to Oklahoma City . His previous idols were Gary Payton and Kevin Garnett .

Williams toured Europe in the summer of 2008, including an international basketball camp in Switzerland.
