Joshua "Josh" Smith (born December 5, 1985 in College Park , Georgia ) is a retired American basketball player who was last under contract with the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA .

Career

Atlanta Hawks

Smith was drafted straight out of high school in the 2004 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks in 17th place . He averaged 9.7 points, 6.2 rebounds , 1.7 assists , 0.8 steals and 1.95 blocks per game in his debut season , and was finished off the season for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2004/05 selected. In the years that followed, Smith became the Hawks' most important player alongside Joe Johnson and later Al Horford . He had his best year with the Hawks in the shortened lockout season 2011-12 , where he achieved career bests with 18.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. He also distributed 3.9 assists and blocked 1.7 throws. Further successes were the appointment to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team 2010. Smith is also the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 500 and 1,000 shotblock mark.

In 2008 he signed a preliminary contract with the Memphis Grizzlies . However, the Hawks immediately followed suit and outbid the Grizzlies, so Smith continued to stay in Atlanta. Smith played five more years for the Hawks, who could reach the play-offs every year, but never got beyond the second round.

Detroit Pistons

In July 2013, Smith signed a four-year, € 40 million contract with the Detroit Pistons . In his first season in Detroit, Smith scored 16.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists. The Pistons clearly missed the play-offs. Just one season later, in December 2014, Smith's contract with the Pistons was terminated. The unsuccessful Pistons wanted to continue the rebuild without Smith and released him so he could sign with a competitive team.

Houston Rockets

Smith signed a season-end contract with the Houston Rockets on December 24, 2014 . Smith confirmed his desire to play for the Rockets centered on Dwight Howard , whom Smith knew from high school days.

2015 to 2017

In the summer of 2015, Smith moved to the Los Angeles Clippers . In January 2016, he was traded back to the Rockets, where he stayed for just one season. After a short stint abroad at the Chinese club Sichuan Blue Whales , Smith switched back to the NBA, to the New Orleans Pelicans - the last station in his career.
