Description and meaning

The flag of Karakalpakistan consists of a horizontal tricolor in the colors blue, yellow and green. On the left in the top blue stripe there is a white crescent moon and five five-pointed stars. The yellow central stripe is bordered by a narrow red and white stripe.

The colors of the flag symbolize Islam, fertility and agriculture (green), water and sky (blue), peace, prosperity and harmony (white) and the Karakalpak people (yellow).

Karakalpak ASSR

The former Karakalpak ASSR , from 1936 part of the Uzbek SSR , previously part of the Russian SFSR since 1932 , had its own flag from 1934, which developed similarly to that of the Uzbek SSR . The basic design of the flag was always a red cloth with an inscription.

The first flag read RSFSR and Karakalpak ASSR in Karakalpak Latin script and in Russian . In 1937 the inscription was changed, from now on the Uzbek SSR and Karakalpak ASSR could be read in Karakalpak and Cyrillic- Uzbek . After the Karakalpak language was written with Cyrillic characters from 1940, the Karakalpak inscription changed in 1941. From 1952 the flag had a blue vertical stripe in the middle. Above the strip was Karakalpak ASSR written in Uzbek and Karakalpak; above it were the symbols of hammer and sickle and red star .
