Panagiotis Fasoulas ( Greek Παναγιώτης Φασούλας , born May 12, 1963 in Thessaloniki ) is a former Greek basketball player and former mayor of Piraeus .
Fasoulas was considered one of the best players in Europe in the 1980s and 1990s. With its size of 2.13 meters, he played at the position Center . Alongside Croatian Stojko Vranković, he is considered the best shot blocker of all time outside of the NBA .
Player career
society
Fasoulas started his career at PAOK Thessaloniki . At the age of 18 he played his first international match (on October 27, 1981) for the Greek national team. In 1986 he was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers NBA team after playing for North Carolina State University in the NCAA. However, Fasoulas decided to continue his career in Europe at PAOK Thessaloniki. With PAOK he won the Greek Cup in 1984 and the Greek Championship in 1992.
In 1991 he led PAOK to their first international title win by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup. In 1993 he reached the final four tournament of the Europa League with PAOK Thessaloniki and took 3rd place there. In the same year Fasoulas moved to Olympiacos Piraeus . Between 1993 and 1997, Fasoulas won four more Greek championships with Olympiakos and won two cups. In 1994 and 1995 he reached the final of the Europa League with Olympiakos, but had to admit defeat there against Badalona (1994) and Real Madrid (1995). In 1997 he finally managed to win the Europa League. In the final, Olympiakos defeated the FC Barcelona team.
National team
Fasoulas made 244 international matches with the Greek national team . He has the second most appearances for the Greek national team after Giannakis and is the third most successful basket scorer in the history of Greece with 2,373 points. His last international match was on August 9, 1998 at the World Cup, when he finished 4th with Greece. The same placement had reached Fasoulas with the national team at the previous World Cup in Canada in 1994.
He was a member of the European championship team from 1987 which sensationally defeated the then reigning world and European champions, the Soviet Union, in one of the top-class games in European Championship history. In 1989 he became vice European champion at the European Championships in Zagreb.
Political career
After his sports career, Fasoulas devoted himself to politics. He became a member of PASOK in the Greek parliament. He has been the mayor of Piraeus since October 15, 2006 .
