from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sport of basketball is still a fringe sport in Austria and has not had any noteworthy successes in previous international comparative matches, either at association or club level. Basketball competitions have been played in Austria since 1936. The Austrian Basketball Association (ÖBV) was founded in 1948 and joined the international basketball association FIBA . The ÖBV has been a member of the European basketball league association ULEB since October 2002 , which includes 16 professional leagues .

National competitions

ABL, men's championship

The basketball league was introduced in the 1946/1947 season . The league was originally run by the Austrian Basketball Association, and has existed as a separate club since 1998.

Nine teams are currently participating in the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga (ABL). Three teams are currently from Styria ( UBSC Graz , Kapfenberg Bulls , Panthers Fürstenfeld ), two each from Upper Austria ( Gmunden , WBC Wels ) and Lower Austria ( Dukes Klosterneuburg , Traiskirchen Lions ) and one team each from Burgenland ( Oberwart Gunners ) and Vienna ( BC Vienna ). The men's basketball championship has been held since 1947. The record champions UBSC Vienna won the title 11 times. Since the 2008/09 season, the league has been known as the Admiral Basketball Bundesliga (ABL) after its main sponsor . The pay-TV channel Sky will broadcast one ABL game per round up to the 2018/19 season.

The teams from Kapfenberg and Gmunden have been the defining teams in the last 16 years with four title wins. The WBC Wels won the title for the first time in 2009. The Austrian Basketball Bundesliga supported the Movember campaign in November 2015 to collect donations for the research and prevention of prostate cancer and other health problems in men. Romed Vieider , Christoph Nagler, Terrence Ayree, Fabricio Vay or Paul Radakovics were among the players who had joined the campaign. The ABL invited all fans to follow suit. In April 2016, the Güssing Knights , the champions of the 2015/16 season, had their Bundesliga license withdrawn for financial reasons. Reigning champions are currently the Oberwart Gunners, who celebrated their second championship title after the 2011/12 season. In September 2016, reforms of the Bundesliga were presented, which Karl Schweitzer , President of the ABL, presented as pointing the way for Austrian basketball.

Since the 1996/97 season, an under-22 competition has been held parallel to the men's Bundesliga. After four championship titles in a row by the U22 team from Traiskirchen Lions , the Güssing Knights were able to secure the title for the first time in 2009 .

Cup competition

The Austrian Cup was first played in 1994. The cup has been named the Chevrolet Cup after its main sponsor Chevrolet since the 2004/05 season , in 2015 and 2016 the cup was named after the sponsor Flyeralarm, in the 2017 Crypto Market Cup. The Swans Gmunden (6) won the most cups, followed by the Oberwart Gunners with four cup wins. The reigning cup winners are the Kapfenberg Bulls, who achieved their third cup victory in 2017. In the Basketball Supercup , the Austrian basketball champion plays against the Austrian cup winner . The Supercup has been played since 2002. The Swans Gmunden have won the Supercup 7 times so far (Bulls Kapfenberg 3x, Dukes Klosterneuburg 2x and once each the Fürstenfeld Panthers, BC Vienna and WBSC Wels).

AWBL, women's championship

The Austrian women's basketball championship is played in the Austrian Women Basketball League (AWBL). After the preliminary round in Pool A + Pool B, the AH1 - Main Round 1 follows. FIBA EuroChallenge

The third highest European competition is the FIBA EuroChallenge . In the seasons 2005/06 and 2008/09 which took Allianz Swans Gmunden part in this competition, but left each without a win in the first round off.
