Movember is a suitcase word borrowed from (Australian) English from the word mustache (short form mo ; German: mustache ) and November , which describes a type of fundraising from Australia . Every year in November men grow mustaches in order to collect donations for the research and prevention of prostate cancer and other health problems of men during the month . “Movember” is organized as a foundation that coordinates the campaign in currently (2012 and 2013) 21 countries and forwards donations to national research institutions. In 2008 more than 170,000 men took part in Movember and raised nearly $ 15 million in donations . About two-thirds of the attendees and donations came from Australia.

history

Movember was introduced in 2003 by a group of young men in Adelaide . Since 2004 and 2006, respectively, there have been annual "Movember" events in Australia and New Zealand , the aim of which - in addition to donations - is to draw attention to men's health. It is primarily about the prevention and better treatment of prostate cancer and testicular cancer . Research into depression and bipolar disorder is also being funded, as both diseases are widespread in men, but are underdiagnosed and are never treated or treated too late. For this purpose, donations are collected, which benefit research through national organizations.

Participants register on the "Movember" website and then start shaved on November 1st . Until the end of November, the participant grows a mustache, different beard shapes are permitted. During this time, friends and acquaintances of the participant can donate money to Movember on their behalf. Participants can form teams - for example within companies - and playfully compete for the highest amount of donations raised. The fact that a mustache is perceived by most people as rather unsightly during the early growth phase serves the purpose: If a participant is asked about his sparse beard, he can refer to his participation in Movember, and thus attract further donations. At the end of November there will be a gala event at which the participants and teams with the highest donation amount will be honored and the most beautiful 30-day beard will be chosen.

In Australia, attendance and donations have grown steadily since Movember was first run. In 2004 - in the first year of the event in Australia - $ 55,000 A was donated, in 2005 it was already $ 1.2 million, in 2006 then $ 7.5 million, and in 2007 finally $ 16.2 million. In 2008, Tim Mathieson, partner of Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard and one of six “Men's Health Ambassadors” in Australia, took part in “Movember” by giving press conferences with developing beards at which he talked about the importance of prevention in dealing with prostate cancer.

Since it was launched in 2003, a total of five million participants worldwide have registered on movember.com. Together they collected donations totaling more than 485 million euros.

distribution

New Zealand was the first country outside of Australia to hold Movember two years after it originally began. In 2006 - the first year of the event in New Zealand - around 10,000 participants donated NZ $ 830,000 , in 2007 it was around 26,000 participants and NZ $ 2.1 million. While the donations collected in New Zealand in 2006 and 2007 were passed on by Movember Inc. to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand (PCFNZ), there was a rift between Movember Inc. and the PCFNZ in June 2008: After the PCFNZ responded to Movember's request Inc. did not want to enter into a swift and controlled spending of the donations for research and educational purposes, Movember Inc. looked for new partners. Since then, Movember Inc. has supported the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and the Cancer Society New Zealand in New Zealand . The Mental Health Foundation is running the “Out of the Blue” project, which aims to provide resources for men who suffer from depression. The Cancer Society uses the donations to research and support prostate cancer.

Since 2007, people in Canada have also been participating in Movember, where donations go to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada . In 2007, Movember in Canada donated more than half a million CAD for this purpose . “Movember” also took place for the first time in 2007 in the USA . More than US $ 700,000 was donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation .

Movember took place in the UK for the first time in 2007, with participants donating more than £ 1 million to the Prostate Cancer Charity. In 2008 a number of major London law firms invited their employees to participate in Movember. Most of the donations (£ 60,000) were made through Linklaters employees.

In Spain , the Fundación para la Educación Pública y la Formación en Cáncer benefited from “Movember”.

In 2008 the campaign also took place in Ireland . In addition, all actors from the series The Panel on RTÉ One grew a beard in the November episode. Donations in Ireland are said to go to the Irish Cancer Society .

In the United States , some professional National Football League athletes grew mustaches as a sign of support. Even basketball professionals of the National Basketball Association , including several members of the Los Angeles Clippers and the New Zealand center Steven Adams and the Australian Center Andrew Bogut could be growing mustaches to raise awareness of the action.

In Germany , the campaign has been officially carried out since 2012. Since the organization does not have its own corporate seat in Germany, the campaign in Germany is carried out by the Australian Movember Foundation in cooperation with a local partner. In 2012 and 2013 the partner was the Bundesverband Prostatakrebs Selbsthilfe e. V. This association issues donation receipts and, together with Movember, decides on the use of the donations.

In Germany, the Movember has been widespread among the professionals of the German ice hockey leagues for several years. Here the clubs regularly collect donations for the Movember organization in November. Furthermore, the Bundesliga players Dominic Maroh from 1. FC Köln and Roman Neustädter from Schalke 04 caused a sensation in November 2013, as mustaches have been seen rarely in the Bundesliga since the late 1980s. With their popularity, Maroh and Neustädter also caused the German Movember movement to attract more attention. The Movember has also been popular and widespread for a number of years with handball professionals from the Bundesliga.
