history

The English part of the company was founded in 1838 and merged in 1920 with the law firm Paines to form Linklaters & Paines .

The German part of the partnership had its origins in Cologne in 1908 and was established in 1995 after several mergers, including the tax and business law firm Rädler Raupach .

Linklaters Germany was finally formed on January 15, 2001 from the merger between the law firms Oppenhoff & Rädler (Germany) and Linklaters (England).

On May 1, 2007, the law firm became a Limited Liability Partnership LLP under English law.

When Linklaters announced in November 2007 that it would close its Cologne location and reopen it in Düsseldorf with lateral entrants, some former Oppenhoff & Rädler partners split off from Linklaters and started their own business in Cologne as Oppenhoff & Partner .

Linklaters opened the Hamburg office at the beginning of 2018.

Rape Oktoberfest celebration 2014

Following the firm's Oktoberfest celebration, some of the firm's employees and partners went to the after-Wiesn party in the now closed Greek scene restaurant Cavos. In the courtyard of the restaurant, a student employee was raped by a partner of the law firm who was also responsible for the staff. The HR partner was then hit several times in the face by another partner in the law firm. After the incident, both partners left the firm. Thomas E. was sentenced to 3 years and 3 months without parole in February 2018. The second law firm partner involved, who wanted to help the raped student, was first issued with a penalty warrant for bodily harm over 150 daily rates of 200 euros each. He appealed against this. The Munich District Court then sentenced him to seven months' imprisonment, 150 hours of work in a social institution and a monthly payment of 1,000 euros during the three-year probationary period (a total of 36,000 euros).

Linklaters came under fire for dealing with the incident. As a result of the incident, the law firm hired an external provider to serve as a counseling and support center for employees. In addition, the office celebrations around the Oktoberfest were restricted.

BaFin legislative initiative

At the beginning of August 2009, Federal Minister of Economics, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, presented a legislative initiative in the cabinet that gave the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority the right to intervene in banks that are largely subsidized by state funds. This law to supplement the Banking Act was drafted by Linklaters, which led to Guttenberg criticism in some cases. At the meeting of the budget committee on August 26, 2009 zu Guttenberg said that he had consulted but had not had a draft law drawn up.
