Nikola Vujčić (born June 14, 1978 in Vrgorac , Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian basketball player who played at a height of 2.11 m on the position of the center . He is currently the manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Career

Vujčić, who is generally considered to be one of the best European centers at the moment, began his professional career in 1995 at KK Split, where he previously played in the youth departments. In 2001 Vujčić signed a contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv , who were looking for a replacement for their outgoing center Nate Huffman. However, since Huffman, who won the Suproleague with Maccabi last year , decided to stay for another season, Vujčić was loaned to the French first division club ASVEL Villeurbanne after only a short time . With Villeurbanne Vujčić won the national championship again for the first time in 21 years for the club and took part in the ULEB Euroleague . Since 2002 Vujčić is back in the Maccabi squad and has collected a number of titles and awards. In addition to five championships and four cup victories, Vujčić won the ULEB Euroleague with Tel Aviv in 2004 and 2005. On November 3, 2005, Vujčić was the first player in the Euroleague, founded in 2000, to achieve a triple-double . In an encounter against Prokom Trefl Sopot , which Maccabi was able to win with 95-68, he reached 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists . After stints at Maccabi Tel Aviv and Olympiacos Piraeus, Vujčić returned to Croatia in 2011, where he played for KK Split. Parallel to his playing career, he also became the manager of Split. In 2013 he took over the management position at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

With the Croatian national team Vujčić won two junior European championships and also took part in four men's European championships.

At the beginning of 2008, Nikola Vujčić was one of a group of 105 basketball players who were nominated by the Euroleague basketball and / or basketball enthusiasts to determine fifty important figures in the sport of basketball in Europe , active in the period 1958 to 2008 and subsequently in Madrid in May 2008 ( Spain ). All the nominated players played a particularly prominent role in the European Cup competitions of FIBA Europe and the Euroleague basketball and were each among the particularly prominent 'stars' of their national league teams.
