history

The English national basketball team has been a member of FIBA since 1937 and took part in a major tournament for the first time in 1946, the European Basketball Championship . The team lost all of their games and finished last. Two years later, English basketball players were part of the UK national basketball team , which finished 20th there.

At the next European Championship participation in 1955 they were again qualified as an independent national team, but were hopelessly inferior in the preliminary round and lost all games. Even at the EM in 1961 , the team was eliminated without a win. After 12 defeats in 12 games, the English achieved their first victory at a European Championship at the 1981 European Championship by beating Greece 64:62 . Since the remaining four group games were lost, however, the group failed in the preliminary round.

Since then, no independent qualification for an international tournament has been achieved. As part of the British national team, English players played in the European Championships in 2009 , 2011 and 2013 . The same goes for the 2012 Olympic Games , where you were automatically placed as the host.
