Larroque-Toirac - townscape with Château

Larroque-Toirac ( Occitan : La Ròca de Toirac ) is a southern French municipality with 133 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitania region . It is part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park .

location

Larroque-Toirac is located on the north bank of the Lot River at an altitude of about 180 meters above sea level. d. M. on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central . Figeac, the next largest city, is only about 15 kilometers (driving distance) to the northeast; the city of Cahors is approximately 62 kilometers to the west.

In the 19th century the place had mostly around 450 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants decreased continuously in the first half of the 20th century to the lowest level in the 1990s.

economy

In the Haut-Quercy , agriculture was primarily self-sufficient , which also included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was almost completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis . Today - in addition to agriculture, retail and handicrafts - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays a major role in the economic life of the municipality.

  • The castle ( château ) was built - starting from a castrum from the 13th century, which was repeatedly captured by the English during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) - in its current state largely in the second half of the 15th century. The decorative wall paintings in the interior date from 1515–1531. The building is privately owned, but is open to visitors in summer (July 1 to September 30); it was classified as a monument historique in 1993 .
  • The castle has a dovecote ( pigeonnier ) from ziegelsteingefülltem truss standing on four stone pillars.
  • The local parish church is a 19th century building.
