Bessonies ( Occitan : Bessoniás ) is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 81 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the north of the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ).
location
Bessonies is located in the cultural landscape of the Quercy at an altitude of about 520 meters above sea level. d. M. on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central in the area of the Causse de Ségala . The nearest major city, Figeac , is approximately 38 kilometers (driving distance) to the southwest. Saint-Céré and the Lot River Valley are approximately 31 and 40 kilometers northwest, respectively.

In the 19th and first half of the 20th century, the place usually had over 300 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows of recent decades.
economy
In the Haut-Quercy , agriculture was primarily run for self-sufficiency , which included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was temporarily given up completely after the phylloxera crisis . Today - in addition to cattle and poultry farming - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays a major role in the economic life of the municipality. The municipal area is also produced again in small scale wine on the appellations Comté Tolosan , and Côtes du Lot is marketed.
history
A castle may have stood here as early as the high Middle Ages, but nothing has survived.

Personalities
After the defeat of the French army at Waterloo on June 18, 1815, Michel Ney (1769–1815), Marshal Napoleon , fled to the south of France; he found temporary shelter in the Château de Bessonies , but was captured and executed on December 7, 1815 in Paris.
