Faycelles ( Occitan : Faicelas ) is a southern French municipality with 659 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitania region . It is part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park .
location
Faycelles is located in the old cultural landscape of the Quercy about one kilometer north of the Lot valley at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level. d. M. on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central . The nearest town is Figeac , about eight kilometers (driving distance) to the northeast ; the city of Cahors is about 68 kilometers to the west.

In the 19th century, the place usually had between 1,000 and 1,300 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants fell continuously in the first half of the 20th century to the lows in the 1960s and 1970s.
economy
In the Haut-Quercy , agriculture was primarily self-sufficient , which also included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was almost completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis . Today - in addition to agriculture, retail and handicrafts - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays an important role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
In the 8th century Faycelles lay directly on the north bank of the Lot; later it was rebuilt at the foot of the castle ( château ). The place was on the main route of the Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis ). In the 17th century the castle was razed.
Attractions
- The town hall ( mairie ) of the community is a former mansion ( manor ) of the 16th century.
- The neo-Gothic parish church dates from the end of the 19th century.
- Below the village there is a covered washing area ( lavoir )
- The Figeac - Cajarc section of the French Way of St. James, Via Podiensis, runs through the village .
