Belmont-Bretenoux is a French commune with 401 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Figeac and the canton of Cère et Ségala (until 2015: canton of Bretenoux ).

The first part of the name of the community can be interpreted as a translation of the Latin bellus mons ( German  beautiful hill ). The adjective bellus does not necessarily have to be given its first meaning. Rather, it can point to a place from which a clear view of the surroundings is granted and, for example, an approaching enemy can be quickly discovered. Some etymologists see a proto-Indo-European root bal- / bel- ( German  rock spike , hill ) in the first part . The toponym would therefore represent a pleonasm .

The second part of the parish name indicates a former colony of Bretons .

The inhabitants are called Belmontois and Belmontoises .

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Cyr

The church has two patron saints , St. Quiricus and St. Julitta. It dates primarily from the 15th century. It originally had a main nave with a length of two bays and a flat apse . Two side chapels on the north and south sides were added. The choir was expanded by two rooms that frame it in the north and south. In the 18th century the church was redesigned. The two side chapels were doubled, which they converted into aisles. Presumably the apse was extended to today's semicircular apse. A canopy that rests on two pillars protects the entrance portal on the west side of the building.

The church contains numerous items of equipment , most of which are inscribed as a monument historique :

  • a reliquary bust of St. Quiricus from the 17th century,
  • a reliquary bust of St. Julitta from the 17th century,
  • an oil painting depicting the Ascension of St. Julitta and St. Quiricus from the 18th or 19th century,
  • a statue of Mary with baby Jesus made of gilded wood from the 17th century,
  • a holy water font of red marble from the 17th century,
  • two bells from the late 15th and late 16th centuries
  • a painted wood crucifix from the 18th century (Christ) and from the 20th century (cross),
  • Copper monstrance from the late 15th or early 16th century,
  • six candlesticks and an altar cross from the 18th century.
