Bagnac-sur-Célé ( Occitan : Banhac ) is a municipality in the south of France with 1,475 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is located in the cultural landscape of the Quercy in the Lot department in the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ).

location

Bagnac-sur-Célé is located in the southwestern foothills of the Massif Central on the River Célé at an altitude of about 240 meters above sea level. d. M. in the northeast of the Quercy. The nearest town, Figeac , is about 15 kilometers (driving distance) to the southwest. The next larger town of Maurs is about seven kilometers northeast.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the place usually had well over 2,000 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has decreased continuously since the second half of the 19th century to the lowest level of the last decades.

For centuries, agriculture in Haut-Quercy was primarily self-sufficient , which included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was almost completely given up after the phylloxera crisis . history

The existence of a priory is assumed for the high Middle Ages, which is said to have been subordinate to the Abbey of Aurillac . In the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and in the Wars of Religion (1562-1598) the enclosure buildings were destroyed and the church continued to be used as a parish church.

  • The parish church of Saint-Pierre is a three-aisled building from the 12th and 13th centuries, the nave and the restrained portal facade, however, were thoroughly redesigned in the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • The three-arched bridge over the Célé dates from the 13th / 14th centuries. Century. Its three segment arches are hardly noticeably pointed at the apex. The two pier heads tapering to a point in the direction of flow ensure that branches and tree trunks are deflected and do not get caught in front of the arches. The drive and walkway is slightly raised in the middle. The approximately 2.60 meter wide and 33 meter long bridge structure was recognized as a Monument historique in 1951 .
  • The small market hall ( hall ) is a cast iron construction from the 19th century.
