history

Olympic basketball tournament 1948

The national team of Ireland joined FIBA in 1947 . The Irish managed to take part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London , as many other nations did not send a team to Great Britain due to the aftermath of the Second World War , which had ended three years earlier . The Irish had no chance in their group, clearly lost all four games and finished the group with a basket ratio of 70: 281. Ireland then played an elimination round for places 17 to 23, which was lost to hosts Great Britain . Then they played for 22nd place against Switzerland . This game was also clearly lost with 12:55, which is why the tournament was finished 23rd and last. This was the only time Ireland had taken part in an international basketball tournament.
