Although Azerbaijan is located in the Middle East , the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation is a member of FIBA Europe and takes part in qualifying rounds for European championships .

However, the team has not yet been able to take part in the finals of a major tournament. In 2006 and 2008 they won gold medals twice in a row at the FIBA European Championships for small countries .
