Bernd Volcic

Bernd Volcic (born January 10, 1976 in Oberwart ) is a former Austrian basketball player . The 2.04 meter long center player played in his home country Austria, the United States, Belgium, France and Italy. He was the captain of the Austrian national team .

Player career

Volcic passed through the youth department of the Oberwart Gunners and made the leap into the Bundesliga team of the club. He spent the 1996/97 season at the University of New Orleans and then returned to Oberwart for a year. Between 1999 and 2005 he played one season for the Belgian first division club Gent and then five years for Mons-Hainaut (also Belgium's first division).

Volcic completed the 2005/06 season with the French first division representative Paris Basket Racing and then moved to Italy for the following season. Until 2010 he played for three different second division clubs, Montecatini, Monferrato and Pavia. The 2010/11 season at his home club Oberwart Gunners was the last of his career, and in 2011 he ended his career. In his senior season, Volcic was named the best local Bundesliga player after leading the Gunners to the championship. He was also named the best player in the final series.

National team

Volcic made his debut for the Austrian national team in May 1995 and later became team captain. In September 2006 he announced his resignation from the ÖBV selection. Both his debut and last game were against Iceland. Volcic completed 63 international matches and posted a total of 807 points.

After the professional career

Since the end of his career, Volcic has been working for the sporting goods manufacturer Adidas and temporarily appears as an expert on basketball broadcasts on the television channel Sky .
