Michael Mai (born July 25, 1974 in Ethiopia ) is an American basketball coach . He has been the head coach of Eisbären Bremerhaven since the end of February 2019 .

career

Mai was born in Ethiopia , where his mother worked as a teacher and his father as a pastor. He later grew up in Nigeria and Liberia and, from the age of 13, in the United States .

He played basketball between 1994 and 1997 on the college team at Judson University , Illinois, and completed a business degree. After the end of his college days, Mai wanted to try the leap into professionalism and, among other things, took part in a sighting camp of the NBA club Chicago Bulls . Due to a knee injury, Mai had to end his playing career in 1997. He returned to university and did a Masters Degree in Intercultural Studies from Western Seminary in Portland , Oregon .

While studying in Portland, Mai worked as the head coach of the basketball team at the Damascus Christian School and, after completing his master's degree, worked full-time as a teacher and trainer at the school near Portland.

From June 2007 Mai acted as European director of "News Release Basketball", a Christian basketball organization in which he had already been active during his student days. His tasks included organizing the European trips for the “News Release” teams, in which former college players from the USA take part. As part of these trips, among other things, friendly matches against teams from European countries and basketball camps for young people take place. Mai supervised the "news release" selection as a trainer and led camps.

In addition to his duties at "News Release", he took over the post of head coach at the regional league club BBC Magdeburg in August 2007 , which he held until July 2010. Then he switched to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA as an assistant coach at UBC Hannover . In December 2010, the UBC promoted him to head coach after separating from Mahmut Ataman . May led the Hanoverians to remain in the sporting class, but the team withdrew to the ProB for the 2011/12 season. Under Mai's leadership, Hanover finished the points round of the ProB season 2011/12 as the first in the standings of the northern season and was eliminated in the subsequent playoffs in the semifinals. In the 2012/13 season, participation in the championship round was missed, and in early May 2013 there was a separation between May and the club.

In June 2014 Mai was introduced as the new head coach at the VfL Kirchheim Knights from the ProA. In the 2015/16 season, VfL reached the quarter-finals in the championship round under his leadership, and in 2016/17 he led the Kirchheimers to the playoff semi-finals. After the end of the season, Mai asked for his contract to be terminated and shortly after his departure from Kirchheim he was introduced by ProA promoted PS Karlsruhe Lions as the new head coach. He led Karlsruhe to the semi-finals in their first second division season and was then named coach of the year in the 2. Bundesliga ProA. In mid-November 2018, he was dismissed from Karlsruhe after the team started the 2018/19 season with two wins and seven losses.

After his time in Karlsruhe, he sat in on the Bundesliga club Eisbären Bremerhaven , became an assistant coach and took over the post of Eisbären head coach at the end of February 2019 after Dan Panaggio resigned. Although the Bremerhaven team experienced an upswing in May and won four of the last ten games of the season, the team was relegated from the Bundesliga, as they lost to the Central German BC on the last match day, while competitor Crailsheim defeated Oldenburg. After the Bundesliga relegation, the future of the Eisbären Bremerhaven remained unclear for several months before the green light was given. Mai stayed in Bremerhaven and was given overall sporting responsibility for the reconstruction: At the beginning of August 2019, he signed a three-year contract as coach and sports director. At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, the Eisbären under Maize's leadership had a series of eight wins before they suffered their first defeat against Chemnitz. In mid-March 2020, when the season was canceled due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , May was second in the table with the team, which is why they were awarded the right to promotion to the Bundesliga.
