Yasar Özhan Gürel (born January 23, 1980 in Ankara ) is a Turkish - German basketball coach and was from 2004 to 2012 coach of the first women's team and then the first men's team at SC Rist Wedel .

Career

Before starting his coaching career, he played as a professional basketball player in Turkey for seven years in the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi and in the country's second division. In 2003 he moved to SC Rist Wedel in the 1st regional league, after a knee operation he had to end his playing career. In 2004 the Turk took over the women's team of the club as a coach.

After three successful years with the women's team, which in 2005 became runner-up in the 2. Bundesliga North under his leadership, he took over the club's men's team in 2007, after having been assistant to Wedel's men's coach Ingo Freyer in addition to his position as a coach in the 2006/07 season was. In Gürel's second year as coach of the Rist men, he rose to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB with the sports club as the champion of the 1st Regionalliga Nord . The future national player Ismet Akpinar played  his first year in men's basketball in 2011/12 under Gürel. In the 2011/12 season he led the team to the ProB championship round for the first time. Before the start of the 2012/13 ProB season , Gürel and Rist Wedel split up after discrepancies in the composition of the squad. He then became youth coach at SC Alstertal-Langenhorn and coach of the Pirates Hamburg in the youth basketball league (JBBL). He was in office with the Pirates until 2015 and reached the play-off quarter- finals with his team in 2013 . After the Hamburg Towers in the second tier 2. Bundesliga ProA were reported, Gurel was in the first season 2014/15 there also assistant of Hamed Attarbashi in the men. After retiring as assistant coach of the Hamburg ProA team, he worked, among other things, as the head of youth camps at the Towers.

For the 2017/18 season, he again took over the management of the Pirates Hamburg U16 team at JBBL as head coach. In the 2018/19 season he reached the play-off quarter-finals again. He held the office of JBBL head coach until 2019, when he took over the management of the U18 team at the Hamburg Towers as well as tasks in the amateur men's area of ​​the towers. Gürel became a German citizen and was employed as a teacher for sports and social studies.
