Ewald Schauer

Ewald Schauer (born August 13, 1927 - † July 9, 2018 ) was a German basketball official , trainer, specialist book author and sports philologist. He is considered a pioneer of basketball in the city of Wedel and is the founder of SC Rist Wedel , which has become one of the largest basketball clubs in Germany.

Life

Schauer was a teacher in Uetersen and in 1965 switched to teaching German, philosophy and sports at the Johann-Rist-Gymnasium in Wedel. There he took over the position of head of sports and introduced basketball in school lessons and in working groups, as the local infrastructure initially did not allow popular team sports such as football and handball to be practiced. This resulted in the SC Rist Wedel, which was founded in May 1968. Schauer was the initiator of the foundation and became the first chairman in the history of the association. Since he and the other teaching staff from Wedel, who also provided the coaches at SC Rist, still had little knowledge of basketball, Schauer won the former national player Gerd Rehder , and later Hans-Dieter Niedlich as instructor and guest coach.

With Schauer as chairman, the Wedeler Verein focused on a competitive sporting orientation and targeted talent development from the start. Under Schauer as a youth trainer / sports teacher, the teams of the Johann-Rist-Gymnasium won several times the national competition " Youth trains for the Olympics ", as a club trainer he led the B-youth of SC Rist Wedel in 1980 to win the German championship title and in 1978 to win the German runner-up in the C youth. He promoted players like Gernot Guzielski, Ingo Knillmann , Bernd Röder and Dirk Rehder, who made it into the youth national teams and who later played for the most part with SC Rist in the 2nd Bundesliga .

Schauer remained chairman of the SC Rist Wedel until 1977, after which he continued to work as a youth coach and from the mid-1980s onwards he was intensively involved with basketball technique. As an individual coach, he promoted later Bundesliga and national players such as Linda Fröhlich , Alexander Seggelke , André Bade , Robin Gray , Marvin Willoughby , Katharina Kühn , Martin Duggen , Anna Görg and Hanna Green . Schauer published his findings on basketball technique in the specialist books "Wurftrainer Basketball", which he published in 2001, and "Basketball. Die Technikschule ”from 2006. There were also publications on basketball technology in the magazines“ Leistungssport ”and“ Basketball ”. He made a name for himself in basketball teaching all over Germany.

Schauer died on July 9, 2018, shortly after he was honored for his services at the 50th anniversary celebration of SC Rist Wedel.

A youth tournament that is organized by SC Rist is named after Schauer.
