The term ChemCats was created in the early 1990s as a trademark of the Chemnitz women's basketball team of the BG Chemnitz , which originated from ITVK and Ascota Chemnitz . The women's team of the BG Chemnitz began a steep rise in 1991 from the upper league through the regional league and the 2nd women's basketball league to the 1st women's basketball league .

The team colors are red and black. The home jerseys were traditionally white / red, away from home red / white. After the entry of the main sponsor Bonnfinanz Chemnitz, the colors are white / blue for home games and blue / white for away games. Meanwhile, the main sponsor is the company CAC (Chemieanlagenbau Chemnitz). The jersey colors are no longer blue / white.

history

The ChemCats chose the path to independence in May 2002, when the former club BV TU Chemnitz 99 planned for the women to retreat to the third division after the first division waiver in 2000. At that time, some helpers wanted to keep the Bundesliga for Chemnitz together with the team. They found a new home with the Chemnitz Basketgirls and in their first season 02/03 they took a sensational 8th place in the 2nd women's basketball league (DBBL) group south. After the loss of all sponsors who remained with BV, it was mainly thanks to the support of the lawyers "Leichthammer, Scheckel and Breil" in the first year that the ChemCats still exist today. For the 03/04 season they set themselves 4th to 6th place as a high goal. In the promotion games in the spring of 2004, reaching the semi-finals was a great success. With an average age of 18.2 years, the "Cats" were the youngest team in women's Bundesliga basketball. 2005 was followed by a one-year reclassification to the northern season of the second division. The semi-finals were also the final destination in 2005 when they lost to promoted BC Wolfenbüttel. The association has u. a. the youth national players Romy Bär , Jana Heinrich , Franziska Frank , Kristin Kretzschmar , Mandy Hänel and Aline Hirsch as well as A national player Petra Gläser . After returning to the southern season, the fight for promotion was formulated as a goal. This goal was achieved in the 2005/06 season, when the ChemCats remained without defeat for the entire season and the subsequent playoffs and were able to become champions of the 2nd DBBL South.

At the end of 2008 the club got into a threatening financial situation due to a budget gap of approx. 45,000 euros, but was able to find a new sponsor and continue to operate first division basketball. The 2008/09 season ended as the penultimate and is thus relegated athletically. Only one week later, however, the team was able to play its way into the final at TOP4, the cup final, and became vice-cup winner.

From the 2019/20 season, they want to start with a completely renewed team with only German players in order to promote the youngsters, which is why they decided to voluntarily withdraw to the second division.
