Alexander Blessig (born November 15, 1993 in Berlin ) is a German - Kuwaiti basketball player . Blessig was most recently under contract with SSV Lokomotive Bernau . He is 1.89 meters tall and occupies the position of the development player.

Career

Blessig began his career at Bayern Munich at the age of twelve. After three years in the youth team of FC Bayern Munich, Alexander Blessig was named the best newcomer to the NBBL . For the 2010/11 season he was appointed by then national coach Dirk Bauermann to the ProA squad of FC Bayern Munich, with whom he was promoted directly to the basketball league . This season, Blessig already played at the age of 16 alongside German basketball greats such as Demond Greene , Steffen Hamann and Robert Garrett .

In the 2011/12 season Blessig played for Alba Berlin in the NBBL and in the second men's team in the ProB . He was also in the Bundesliga squad of the capital city, but was not used in the top German division. After a year in Berlin, he moved to Florida Gulf Coast University ( NCAA Division I) in Fort Myers ( Florida US ) for the 2012/13 season , with which he reached the Sweet16 of the NCAA playoffs, but only booked a small proportion of the game. After his season at FGCU , Blessig moved to Rollins College (NCAA Division II), where he received his bachelor's degree in international economics with Magna cum laude and played for the college's basketball team called "Tars" for three years. By increasing the number of games he managed to increase his statistics in the 2014/15 season to 11.8 points as well as 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per match. For his achievements, Blessig was appointed to the Capital One Academic All-District Team .

Blessig has been playing for the German record champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen since the 2016/17 season , for which he first appeared as captain in the 2018/19 season. In the 2017/18 season, Blessig was regularly on the team's starting line-up for the first time and averaged 8.3 points and 3.9 assists per game. In the 2018/19 season he won the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB with the Rhinelanders. Blessig was involved in this success in 29 missions during the season with averages of 8.8 points, 3.3 basket assists and 3.1 rebounds.

During the summer break of 2019, Blessig switched to SSV Lokomotive Bernau (2nd Bundesliga ProB) and began his professional career in Berlin after completing his business studies. He moved to Kuwait in January 2020 as he is a citizen of the country.

National team

In 2009 Blessig was appointed to the U16 national team of the German Basketball Federation . In 2013 he started for the U20 national team of the German Basketball Federation at the FIBA European Championship in Estonia.
