The Ratiopharm-Arena (spelling: ratiopharm arena) is a multifunctional arena in the large district town of Neu-Ulm in the state of Bavaria in Germany .
In addition to a hall with 6200 seats for basketball games and up to 9000 seats for concerts, the complex includes a bus parking lot, car parking spaces with a total of 1,750 spaces and a multi-storey car park with 250 spaces for VIP visitors. The hall is named after the Ulm generics producer ratiopharm . Shortly before the hall's fifth anniversary, the agreement was extended for a further five years until the end of the 2020/21 season. For this, Teva Germany pays the operating company around 250,000 euros a year.
history
Construction began on May 19, 2010, and the foundation stone was laid two months later on July 13. The hall is a cooperation between the two cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm, which jointly use this place as an event center. Therefore the project name was "Multifunctional Hall Ulm / Neu-Ulm" until the name was given or announced. The opening of the Ratiopharm Arena took place on December 9, 2011 with an opening concert, at which Max Raabe , The Baseballs and DJ Bobo performed.
The main user of the hall is the ratiopharm Ulm basketball team , which also initiated the construction of such a multifunctional hall . The previously used Kuhberghalle on the Ulmer Kuhberg with officially 3000 standing and seated seats no longer met the demands of the basketball league . With the completion of the Ratiopharm Arena this deficiency could be remedied. The basketball players from ratiopharm Ulm play at least 17 times during the main round of the Basketball Bundesliga in the arena and also at all home games during the play-offs. In 2013 the BEKO Supercup took place for the first time in the Ratiopharm Arena . The participating nations were Bosnia and Herzegovina , Germany , Greece and Macedonia . The hall in Neu-Ulm was selected a second time for the ERGO Supercup 2016 in August of that year.
A second regular user is the 1st table tennis Bundesliga (TTBL). In the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, the Upper Swabian table tennis club TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen played its top home games in the Bundesliga differently from its usual home in the Ratiopharm Arena and thus achieved an above-average backdrop of over 2500 spectators for German table tennis conditions. In addition, in January 2016, the semi-finals and the final of the German men's table tennis cup were held for the first time in front of a sold-out hall with 3,500 spectators. In the following season 2016/17 the TTBL stuck to the Ratiopharm Arena as the venue for the cup final round, whereas the TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen did not play any league games in Neu-Ulm this season. In the third edition in January 2018, the capacity for table tennis was increased to around 4000 spectators. The table tennis club TTC Neu-Ulm , which was founded in spring 2019 and started with a wildcard in the table tennis Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season , declared the Ratiopharm Arena to be its home ground .
In addition to the sporting events, concerts, trade fairs and business events take place regularly in the Ratiopharm Arena. For this purpose, the multifunctional interior can be changed with many different seating and layout options. Udo Jürgens gave concerts in the hall in 2012, later James Last , Peter Maffay , André Rieu and other music.
In addition, the arena offers more than 17 additional rooms that can be booked for events. With sizes between 40 and 1040 m² (interior space up to 2000 m²), the rooms are suitable for many different events such as weddings, lectures, workshops, concerts, etc.
criticism
The cost of building the hall and the operating costs incurred for using it first had to find a carrier. After Max Bögl found a construction company to take over the costs of the project, there were critics who saw the “Neu-Ulmer Volksfest” held on the Neu-Ulmer Volksfestplatz at risk. The location and the area were unique in the area, which is why concerns were felt especially among the showmen . The Ulmer Volksfest in the immediate vicinity already recorded a significant increase in visitors from the Bavarian sister city in the first year after the opening of the arena (with 200,000 visitors, the most popular festival in Ulm for 10 years).
Another point of criticism is the event hall's payment system. Costs for cloakroom and food can be paid either with the “SchwabenCard” of Stadtwerke Ulm / Neu-Ulm or the “ratiopharm arena Card” (a type of prepaid card), but not with cash or other cashless payment options. The cards can be topped up on site or at Stadtwerke Ulm / Neu-Ulm with cash or an EC card. The credit loaded onto the card can be paid out at any time.
