Basketball Supercup
The Basketball Supercup of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) is an international basketball tournament for men's national teams that has been held annually since 1987 with the exception of 1990 and 1993. It takes place in the summer of each year as a preparatory tournament for the final tournaments that take place in autumn, such as the European championships , the world championships or the Olympics . Except for the first events, in which there were also preliminary round matches with more than four teams, the tournament with the German national team as the host and three visiting teams is usually held in a hall on a weekend on two to three consecutive days. Together with the Acropolis tournament in Athens, it is one of the longest-running and most consistent preparatory tournaments on the European basketball competition calendar.
After Dortmund was the venue for the final rounds four times in a row from 1987 to 1991, the tournament then took place in Berlin , where they were guests seven times, most recently in 2006. In addition to Bremen (1998), Stuttgart (2000) and five times in the Volkswagen Hall Braunschweig (most recently in 2005), starting in 2004, the Forum Bamberg has so far been eight guests , most recently also known as Brose Arena and twice in the ratiopharm arena in Neu-Ulm . In 2019, the Edel-optics.de Arena in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg was the venue for the fourth time .
In 2010 the company Beko Elektronik A.Ş. for three years as a name sponsor. From then on, the tournament was called the BEKO Supercup . After a year without a sponsor (2014), the Ergo Insurance Group became the new title sponsor in April 2015. The name ERGO Supercup applied to the 2015 and 2016 events. For 2018 and 2019, the naming rights for the event in Hamburg were given to the local logistics company VTG AG .
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Supercup 2020 on June 13 and 14 in Hamburg was canceled.
