Bertuks made his debut in 2006 at the European and World Championships for active players. He was at the top of the international league for the first time two years later at the European Championships in his home country Latvia, when he finished seventh on the long distance, just under three and a half minutes behind the winner, Dmitri Zwetkow from Russia. At the World Championships in the same year in the Czech Republic, he came in ninth place in the race over the middle distance. In 2009, the Latvian relay with Mārtiņš Sirmais , Janis Krumins and Bertuks benefited from the failure of several top teams in the relay race of the World Championships in Miskolc, Hungary, as a result of an accident involving the Swedish runner Martin Johansson . Bertuks ran as the last runner with a slight gap of four seconds on the Finnish relay, the Latvian relay in fourth place.
In 2012, in Lausanne, he was completely surprising as the 60th world champion in the middle distance. This makes him the first Latvian world champion in orienteering. Two days later in the final over the long distance, he proved that this success was not an isolated incident. Here he secured the bronze medal behind Olav Lundanes from Norway and Matthias Merz from Switzerland. In 2013 he repeated third place on the long distance. The victory went to Thierry Gueorgiou from France, ahead of Jani Lakanen from Finland .
Bertuks runs in Latvia for OK Alūksne . Like his compatriot Mārtiņš Sirmais, he competes in international competitions such as the Jukola for Turun Metsänkävjät from the Finnish city of Turku .
