With the victory of Great Britain there was a surprise in the men's relay race. Initially, François Gonon had put his favorite French in the lead. After the second runners, France was second behind Great Britain and ahead of Russia and Switzerland. However, the French runner-up Thierry Gueorgiou had to give up the race after being allergic to a bee sting. The French were eliminated as well as the Danes who had previously been 13th. The Scandinavian nations Finland, Norway and Sweden came in 6th to 8th. Austria came in 11th and Germany in 16. Of 33 teams that crossed the finish line (three were disqualified), South Africa finished last with 3:51:35 h .

All 26 teams that started crossed the finish line. After the first runners, Russia was ahead of the Swedes and Czechs at the same time. The Finnish team was initially only in seventh place. The second Russian runner, Julia Novikowa , could no longer hold the Russian lead and the relay fell back to third. With a solid run, Vroni König-Salmi built a lead of almost a minute on the Swedes, who are still in second place. The Czech Republic was now in fourth place, Finland climbed to fifth place after Merja Rantanens run ahead of Norway. Lea Müller now starts for the leading Switzerland .
